The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation’s “Books in Character” Programs incorporate our storybook characters promoting literacy throughout Northern NH and Western Maine with character appearances, book distributions and our ever growing Outreach Reading Program.
The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation continues to grow their “Books in Character” Outreach Reading Program from the initial outing, the winter of 2004, to reaching over 1,200 children in 54 area preschools during the 2007/2008 school year. Each visit includes a volunteer dressed as a storybook character, a volunteer reading, and the gift of a book to each child. Over 20,000 books have been given out through this program in just four years.
The “Books in Character” Programs are currently serving Carroll, Coos, and Grafton Counties of NH; and Oxford County in Western Maine.
The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation’s “Books in Character” Capital Campaign is designed to maintain and expand our current “Character” Programs. Our main goal with this campaign is to reach the entire state of NH with our Outreach Reading Program. We are looking to purchase two vehicles for the characters to venture out in, with their entourage of volunteers and support staff, as they go out to promote literacy to young children throughout NH and Maine.
The “Books in Character” Programs were developed to expose, excite and encourage a love of literacy and education to children in the areas we serve. As we reach our goals of the “Books in Character” Capital Campaign, we plan to expand the excitement and success of this outreach program throughout the State of New Hampshire and parts of Western Maine.
